Description
A Vario Ceramic Disc is a replaceable component in a water filter that acts as a pre-filter to block larger particles and prolong the life of the main filter. It is also used in some high-end coffee grinders as a durable, heat-resistant burr that maintains sharpness. The term "Vario" can also refer to other products, like slurry injectors for agricultural use or dental restoration discs. 
 
In water filters (Katadyn Vario)
  • Function: 
    A cleanable pre-filter disc that protects the pleated glass fiber filter cartridge from clogging by blocking larger particles. 
     
  • Benefit: 
    Helps maintain the filter's flow rate and extends the overall life of the filtration system. 
     
  • Maintenance: 
    The disc can be cleaned in the field if pumping becomes difficult. It should be replaced when the ceramic surface is visibly worn and plastic is showing through. 
     
In coffee grinders (Baratza Vario)
  • Function: 
    54mm flat burrs used in coffee grinders, made of durable, long-lasting ceramic material.
  • Benefit: 
    Ceramic burrs hold their sharpness longer than steel, do not heat up as much, and preserve the integrity of the coffee beans.
  • Application: 
    Can be used for grinding beans for espresso, cold brew, and pour-over coffee.
